Study Abroad
Ask anyone and they will likely tell you that the benefits to studying abroad are priceless: Cross-cultural exchange that broadens the mind, increased awareness of another culture, international friendships to last a lifetime, increased fluency in another language, and increased job prospects and advancement.
Ask the same people and most will also tell you the extraordinary costs to international study make it prohibitive: International student fees, travel costs, visa and medical insurance costs, increases to the cost of living, extended study time, as well as the associated stresses of adapting to a new region.
DESHM widens the door to international exchange by removing most of these hurdles:
- There are no international student fees. You pay the regular tuition costs of your home institution;
- Return airfare, travel visas and medical insurance are provided;
- You receive a monthly allowance to help cover the extra costs of living abroad. These allowances range between $700 and $1000 per month, depending on the cost of living at the host institution and the length of the exchange;
- You receive credit for your studies while on exchange, thereby not extending the length of your degree or diploma program;
- Prior to leaving, your home institution will provide you with an orientation to your host country and institution, help you find accommodation (often a home-stay) and act as general support in your journey;
- Advisors from both the home and host institutions will you assist in your course selection. Once arriving at the host institution there will be designated faculty and peer support to orient you to your new surroundings. Moreover, this support will continue to be there throughout your stay.
This program is made possible through the Program for North American Mobility in Higher Education, a trilateral grant initiative sponsored by the Governments of Canada, the United States and Mexico. (More on Funding Agencies)
