What is DESHM?

North Island College orientation day.
DESHM (Developing Environmentally Sensitive Hospitality Managers) is a trilateral academic exchange initiative made possible through funds provided by specific arms of the Canadian, U.S. and Mexican governments.
Beginning in the Fall of 2009, hospitality, tourism and business students from six educational institutions will have the opportunity to participate in an exchange program with one of the four international partners located outside their country. Students will receive full academic credit towards their diploma or degree while developing an awareness of the issues of environmental and cultural sustainability as they relate to the hospitality and tourism industry.
The DESHM Consortium is unique and diverse among educational institutions in the NAFTA nations, spanning the full geographic reach of the three nations. The diversity of institutions – from community colleges to universities offering significant graduate programs, from metropolitan cities to distant locations in Canada and Mexico – provides unique student exchange opportunities. The diversity of geographic locations and institutional structure brings together a diverse group of academic colleagues who understand sustainability issues related to tourism and hospitality management in their region, and who will provide exchange students with an opportunity to see NAFTA nations through new glasses.
